A Pinch of Salt, a film about Bonneville by John Clason.

Obviously I'm a big fan of the moving image, and I love to see what other people are out there doing with their cameras. Josh Clason takes us to an American automotive mecca and the Bonneville Salt Flats. Land speed racing has gone hand in hand with Bonneville. . . (Read more here)

They're Giving Away '32 Fords.

. . . well, they were, 79 years ago. I love watching these old promo videos, seeing this many brand new '32 Fords in one place. It's amazing how the same car can looking like an "antique automobile", or it can look completely sinister. . .  (Read more here)

Winter Projects.

It's not quite winter yet, but it is fall and now's the time most people start thinking about their winter projects.  Whether it's dragging out that old pile of parts and starting a new build, or taking apart something old and working out some of the bugs.  Either way, show us what you've got planned. . . ID-ing The Ford Flathead.

Most engine makes have their own details that allow you to tell them apart at a glance.  Most people take a look at the valve covers to tell you whether it’s an Olds or a Chevy, and if you don’t see any valve covers you’re most likely looking at a flathead.  Ford started producing the flathead V8 in 1932, and made the last. . .

ID-ing Ford Wishbones.

One of the main factors in a Traditional Hot Rod front suspension is the Ford wishbone.  The wishbone holds the axle in place while preventing fore and aft movement.  You can run them stock, or you can run them split. . . but whatever you decide, you need to know what you’re looking at before you start mocking up your front. . .

The Rodder's Journal Scrap Book.

The Rodder’s Journal is known for many things, most notably their overall quality.  The writing is top notch, and the photography is outstanding.  But aside from new photographs, The Rodder’s Journal also showcases many old pictures taken by the people who were there back in “the days” to really give a visual sense of . . .

Keep This Under Your Hood.

I love old stuff, and not just cars, or old tools. . . but I also love old movies, and not just film noir.  I came across this old Ford promotional video sometime ago and always thought. . .

Rumblers 11th Annual Car Show.

Every year The Rumbers Car Club puts tons of hard work into putting on the only Hot Rod and Custom show in NYC. Sure we have the Auto show at The Jacob Javits Center, but that’s not a hot rod show. It’s a show where major car companies show off their prototypes, and give us a taste of what to expect in the new model year. . .

Shiftless. . . Day 9/10.

Things have been going good, broke a few things but everybody got in a bunch of runs. . . the only downside is that it seems we’ve reached the point that most racers dread, big changes seem to equal small increases in speed.  Keith also has a speed restriction where he isn’t allowed to exceed 175 miles an hour. . . First Run. . . Day 8.

Between tech inspection, getting the cars ready, and trying to film everything that’s going on, we got to bed late last night and had to wake up at 6:00am to film Chuck Vranas shoot all 13 of The Rolling Bones cars, so I didn’t get a chance to update.  Here’s where we’re at now. . . Thursday on The Salt, Day 6.

All of the driving, breaking down, fixing, getting dirty, sleeping in run down motels, eating poorly, going to bed late, and waking up way. . . way too early has finally paid off.  Today we arrived at The Mecca of Hot Rodding, sacred ground to those of us who love Hot Rods and their history “The Birthplace of Speed”. . . Finally in Utah, Day 5.

Finally made it into the state of Utah, but not quite all the way to The Bonneville Salt Flats just yet. We stopped in Orem Utah to meet up with Chris at The Salt Flats Speed Shop. Chris had an amazing place with a couple of projects around displaying his incredible skills.  It was a long day and everyone is pretty beat. . . (Read more here)

Getting Close. . . Day 4.

Started the day off in Nebraska and ended it in Wyoming. We’re just one state away from Utah and now is when you can really notice the change in the landscape. The trees are sparse and the grass is loosing it’s color with each mile.  Jorge’s car wouldn’t turn over this morning, there was no spark.  When Jim pulled. . . (Read more here)

Hoods and Hammers, Day 3.

Dick’s Five WIndow was running a little rich yesterday, so Jim got up around the same time as the roosters to switch out the jets. Of all the Hot Rods on the journey, Dick’s is the newest build. . . I don’t even think the paint was fully dry when we left on Saturday morning. So this pretty much the ultimate. . .  (Read more here)

NY to Utah, Day 2.

The roads got pretty bumpy in Ohio (nothing compared to The Bronx, but bumpy enough to rattle some parts loose).  Yesterday just outside of Perrysburg, Dick lost the bolt that holds the front friction shock arm onto the rest of the car.  so at the crack of dawn everyone got up to give him a hand getting the shock. . . And We're Off.

We got to The Rolling Bones Hot Rod Shop yesterday afternoon. Just about everyone who was taking the trip was there. We BBQ-ed, we told lies, and did all of the last minute preparations to the cars to get them ready for the 2800 miles journey from New York, to The Bonneville Salt Flats. . . (Read more here)

Hitting The Road.

We’ve got the car packed with camera gear and today we’ll be hitting the road and headed out to Bonneville with The Rolling Bones to shoot the follow up to “The Road to Bonneville”. So any orders placed between now and then may experience a slight delay in shipping.  You can follow along. . . (Read more here)

Back From The Dead.

The scattered bones of a ’32 Ford frame found it’s way into both mine and my brother’s hands today. A fellow named Jim from New Jersey is putting together a traditionally styled ’32 roadster and needed someone to straighten the rails, fill all of the extra holes, and pretty much repair all of the sins committed. . .  (Read more here)

Hot Rod Confidential.

For sometime I’ve wanted to add a “news / blog” section to the Atomic Hot Rods site to keep people updated on what was going on. Updates on stuff that we’re filming, cars that we’re building, shows that we’re going to, and maybe even a tech article here and there. . . but instead of just sticking to a blog where we write and you read, I decided that. . .  (Read more here)
